Question:

Gastroenterology Problem; For one month I have experienced a change in bowel motion and have experienced Abdominal Colic with gas and changes between Diarrhea and Constipation. Also, a change in stool consistency from normal to tiny round pellets. I had a stool examination and was told that I am experiencing undigested food. Now I have this gelatin like tissue with no smell, This is not mucus as I am an Anesthesiologist and can differentiate between gelatin like substance and mucus. My food intake is mostly fiber. I do not have Lactose Intolerance. I am in Iraq so good medical care here is very limited. Thank you for any assistance.

Answer:

Hi Dalai,

I am sorry to hear that you are suffering with this. It is hard to say what is going on medically with you without a proper exam and testing. A worrisome sign would be if you were experiencing weight loss along with your discomfort. Are you having fevers or pain that is localized to a specific area? Any vomiting? Have they done a pregnancy test? Any blood in the stool?
I see that you mentioned that they did a stool examination. Did they find an infection? It looks like you were taking flagyl and cipro at some point so were they treating diverticulitis perhaps? Also I'm not sure if you have access to a doctor that can do colonoscopies as this may be what you need to evaluate the GI tract to rule out infection or inflammatory bowel disease. You may just have irritable bowel which is closely related to stress and anxiety. Sometimes just following a very bland diet of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast may help as well. Probiotics which are healthy bacteria usually found in yogurt helps to replenish your immune system in your GI tract.
Bottom line it sounds like you will need a further evaluation.
I hope this helps
