Question:

I took some Promethazine-Codeine prescribed by my local physician today to try to calm down my coughing. Unfortunately,I'm experiencing some mild but uncomfortable swelling in my throat. I don't think its getting any worse but its preventing me from sleeping. What can I take to reduce the swelling?!

Answer:

If your throat still feels swollen, please seek medical attention immediately. I am concerned that this could obstruct your breathing as you sleep. In the meantime, if you have a antihistamine, you could take that to help reduce swelling, but please don't consider that a cure. You may have an allergy to codeine and your medicine needs to be changed so that you do not have a worse reaction the next time you take it. If you have any other concerns, please feel free to ask. I hope you feel better soon. Dr. B
