Can You Use Hydrocortisone for Heat Rash?
Since so many of our patients who used our ask a doctor online network to ask the question, “can you use hydrocortisone for heat rash”, we decided to write a review on the subject. A heat rash occurs because of blocked sweat glands or hair follicles. Consequently, the trapped sweat is what causes the raised rash that is seen. Furthermore, the rash is caused by exposure to hot environments. Where clothing causes friction on the skin is typically where the rash appears.
Therefore, there are three different types of rashes that can form. They each look a little different:
- Clear rash. This is mild and the bumps are not itchy or painful.
- Red rash. This is an itchy rash with a red bump.
- Deep rash. Flesh colored bumps. These form after many episodes of heat rash.
Usually, a heat rash does not need medical attention. Therefore, you can treat the rash at home. However, if the rash is severe, or limits what you can do, you should see your doctor be sure it is a heat rash.
Hydrocortisone is a topical steroid that can be used for a number of skin conditions. Can you use hydrocortisone for heat rash? Certainly, you can. To reduce itching, topical steroids can be used. Generally, this does not need to be used on mild heat rashes. However, it is also important to be sparing when applying the steroid so you do not experience unwanted side effects.
Can Herbals be Used for Heat Rash?
Certainly, to treat symptoms of a heat rash, herbal products can be used. Furthermore, they should be things that will be soothing and cooling for the skin.
Here is a list of products you can try to treat your heat rash:
- Oatmeal bath
- Non-drying mild soap
- Aloe vera
- Cold compress
- Apple cider vinegar
Generally, these products will cool the skin down, and unclog your sweat glands. Finally, the rash will go away quickly once your skin cools.
