What Causes Freckles to Suddenly Appear?

Since we’ve been asked the question repeatedly, what causes freckles to suddenly appear,  we decided to write a review on the subject. Freckles are brown spots on your skin that usually appear in places that are visible to the sun. Freckles develop when the skin is exposed to too much ultraviolet radiation from the sun. There are two types of freckles that people can have. First, there are ephelides, which are the spots that people typically think of as freckles. Second, there are solar lentigines, which are aging spots and sunspots. These two types of freckles might look the same on some people, but they develop differently.

Freckles form after being in the sun. They usually develop on areas of the skin that are not protected from the sun, like the neck, face, and hands. Freckles are also more commonly seen on people with lighter skin.

What Causes Freckles to Suddenly Appear?

Since freckles form because of sun exposure if a cluster of freckles suddenly appear it is because you have been in the sun and the ultraviolet radiation has caused your skin to darken in parts. It is more common for this to happen when you don’t use sunscreen or wear protective clothing while in the sun. If you get a sunburn, you are more likely to develop a cluster of freckles.

Protect yourself From Freckles

To avoid getting freckles, be sure to wear sunscreen or clothing that can protect you from the sun. Limit the amount of time that you spend in the sun. Try avoiding being in the sun when the rays are strongest, which is usually from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. You can burn on cloudy days as well, so be sure to wear sunscreen and protective clothing on these days if you are spending time outside.

When to Seek Treatment

Freckles are usually not harmful, but they may indicate a risk for developing melanoma, a type of skin cancer. If you have freckles, look at them every month to look for these irregularities:

  • A – Asymmetry: The halves of your freckles should match if they do not then it is not symmetrical
  • B – Border: Is the border smooth, or bumpy? Cancerous freckles tend to be bumpy
  • C – Color: The freckle should be one color, those that have different shades of color could be a warning sign
  • D – Diameter: If the freckle is bigger than a pencil tip (1/4 inch) it can be cancerous
  • E – Evolving: If there is any change in your freckle, tell your doctor

If you notice any of the above things in your freckles or sunspots, you should make an appointment with your doctor to have them checked.
